Woodbridge, Va. — A plan to alleviate overcrowding on OmniRide buses appears to be working.
In July, the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission voted to add eight new morning trips to the commuter bus schedule, aiming to curb chronic overcrowding by 40 percent.
In a report he will deliver Thursday to the commission, PRTC Executive Director Alfred H. Harf says more capacity has been added to buses.
“Preliminary numbers indicate that this is about what has happened. That said, there are occasions when morning trips experience standees or when the incidence of standees on afternoon trips isn’t higher than 40 percent, because incidents do arise that cause unusual spikes [in ridership,]” stated Harf.
The addition of four new federally-funded buses made it possible for the transit agency to add the additional buses to the schedule.
