FALMOUTH, Va. – A woman who refused to check out of a hotel this morning got the attention of police.
The manager of the Howard Johnson on U.S. 17 in south Stafford called police when a woman wouldn’t leave the room, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
When a deputy went to the room and knocked on the door to confront the woman, he heard what sounded like a shotgun being loaded. The woman then refused to come out.
Police then swarmed the area about 12:30 p.m.
Police have not identified the woman, nor did they say if anyone is believed to be inside the hotel room with her.
Initial reports indicated that an armed man was inside the hotel room with his family, but Kennedy said those reports were false.
Police are working for a peaceful end to the situation, said Kennedy.
The police action on south Stafford has not forced the closure of any roads in the area.
