The wait is nearly over for those seeking an answer regarding the reopening of schools in Prince William County and Manassas.

On July 7 and 8, both school boards will hold separate meetings to hear community input on the reopening of their school divisions, review survey data collected from their staff and school communities, and discuss the matter, according to press releases from both school divisions. Manassas is set to vote on their reopening plans on July 14, and Prince William is set to do the same on July 15.

OmniRide increases service levels, staff at commuter lots

OmniRide has resumed operations of all routes and has increased service levels on OmniRide Express buses which began in mid-June.

Weekday Express service to destinations in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. are running on a Friday schedule, which is one step down from full-service. The increase in service levels was based on the improving COVID-19 conditions, and the Governor’s order to begin reopening the state.

Prince William edits vulgarity out of uploaded video recording

A man who identified himself as a resident of Prince William County's Potomac District told the Board of County Supervisors on June 16 "you guys F-ing suck."

In a highly unusual move, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors has edited all vulgarity out of the public comment portion of its June 16 video recording.

Black Lives Matter supporters filled the citizen comments period demanding racial equality, the defunding of police, and the end of the 287(g) program, abolished the next day. All this comes after a month of nationwide protests that were sparked by the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd.

Prince William Humane Society Launches the Adopt Shop Co-Op

On June 22, 2020, the Prince William Humane Society (PWHS) announced the launching the Adopt Shop Co-Op.

The Adopt Shop Co-Op is an affiliate program that supports local animal welfare organizations and is managed by Advocates for Abused and Abandoned Pets (A3P). It will help the PWHS increase pet adoption rates, expand outreach efforts to existing and potential pet owners, and improve the well-being of the region’s pets.

Police to begin collecting information on race, gender during traffic stops

Beginning July 1, 2020, Virginia House Bill 1250, commonly known as the Community Policing Act, will become law. It requires local law enforcement agencies to collect and report certain data pertaining to drivers to the Virginia State Police during a motor vehicle (traffic) stop.

In Prince William County, some of this data was previously collected on stops that resulted in an arrest or the issuance of a Virginia Uniformed Summons (VUS).

Prince William County Route 1 name change cost estimates top $1 million

A county report estimates it could cost as much as $1.5 million to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway.

Route 1 in Prince Willam County, as its also known, runs from Quantico, through Dumfries and Woodbridge, north to the Occoquan River.

Police investigate shots fired in Dumfries, Woodbridge neighborhoods

From Prince William police:

Shooting into a Residential Dwelling – On June 18 at 12:10PM, officers responded to a residence located in the 3600 block of Brockenbrough Dr in Dumfries (22026) to investigate a destruction of property. The homeowner reported to police that a hole was found in a window and interior ceiling of the residence. Another hole was found near a rear door to the home. While investigating, officers discovered an additional home on the same street which sustained damage. The investigation revealed that gunshots were heard in the area between 10:00PM and 11:30PM on June 17. No injuries or other property damage were reported. Officers did respond to a report of suspected gunfire around 10:30PM on June 17. The area was checked at that time, and no evidence of a shooting was located.

On Tuesday, June 16, the Dumfries Town Council appointed Gary West to the Planning Commission and Lawrence Nickerson to the Architectural Review Board.

West worked on the Planning Commission before resigning in February due to an upcoming move.

HVAC fire displaces family from Dumfries-area home

Four adults and two children were displaced by a fire at their home.

Fire and rescue crews were called to a single-family home in the 16500 block of Reservoir Loop near Dumfries at 9:37 a.m. for a report of a structure fire. The neighborhood is located off Allen Dent Road.
