MANASSAS — Homeowners in Manassas will pay more in taxes next year.

The city council hiked the tax rate by two cents to $1.48 per $100 of assessed property value.  It’s a 5% percent increase that will generate an average tax bill of 4,295 for city residents in fiscal 2020, starting July 1.

ALEXANDRIA — As six Metrorail stations south of National Airport are now shut down this summer, the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) will be a convenient alternative for many commuters.

VRE offers service at two stations, Franconia-Springfield and Alexandria, that are a short walk from the  closed Franconia-Springfield and King St-Old Town Metrorail stations. VRE trains run northbound in the morning and southbound in the evening with stops at Crystal City in Virginia, and L’Enfant and Union Station in Washington, D.C.

MANASSAS – Novant Health UVA Health System has announced that Douglas J. Markert, MD, will serve as Chief Clinical Officer for its Prince William Medical Center and Haymarket Medical Center.

Previously, Dr. Markert served as chief interventional radiologist for the University of Virginia Community Division in Manassas. In holding this position, Dr. Markert has nearly 20 years of experience performing minimally invasive image-guided surgical techniques to treat a wide range of vascular conditions.

FREDERICKSBURG — The Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank (FRFB) received a $10,000 grant from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation which went toward a new refrigerated truck.

The truck will deliver fresh produce to individuals and families in Fredericksburg, the community of Locust Grove and in Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

STAFFORD — (Press Release) During Preservation Month, Stafford’s Historical Commission recognizes the men and women who research and preserve the county’s history. The group for this year was to be honored at the May 21 Board of Supervisors meeting, following a special reception at 6 p.m. in Conference Room ABC of the George L. Gordon, Jr. Government Center, 1300 Courthouse Road, Stafford (22554).

“Our lives in Stafford County are so much richer because individuals take upon the mission of telling our story,” said Anita Dodd, Chairman of the Stafford County Historical Commission. “It’s important to take the time to highlight their accomplishments on our behalf. We are supremely grateful.”

BRISTOW — 2 Silos Brewing Company presented a check to The Sweet Julia Grace Foundation (SJGF) for $32,793.33 — the largest donation ever received by the foundation.

The amount raised was the result of the first 6 months of a unique partnership between the brewing company and the nonprofit where 100% of proceeds from the Raspberry Cream Ale and $1 of each cheese pizza was contributed.
