I remember the first time I covered a meeting of the Prince William County Planning Commission.

The body, appointed by members of the Board of County Supervisors, meets regularly and is tasked with making recommendations to the Supervisors on land-use matters. Putting simply, if a large development like a neighborhood of homes or a large shopping mall is built, plans for the new development have most likely passed through the Planning Commission.

A violent 45 days in Prince William County, police reports show

Here’s a look at a compliation of reports published by the Prince William County Police Department over the past 45 days.

On June 17 at 6:15PM, officers responded to the Riverwood Apartments located in the 2700 block of Yosocomico Ln. in Woodbridge (22191) to investigate an initial report of shots fired…a group of individuals… gunfire was exchanged with another group of individuals who were near the playground on Yosocomico Ln. Both groups dispersed following the gunshots… a round entered an occupied residence, grazing a 9-year-old girl.

Bailey to rename Dumfries street after African-American settlement

A road will be renamed for an African-American settlement that was founded near Dumfries 200 years ago.

Mine Road in Dumfries will be renamed Batestown Road at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19. A celebration will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. to commemorate the event. The event will take place in Merchant Park in Dumfries, near the historic Weems-Botts House.

Barney Ray Rish

Barney Ray Rish, 89, lost his battle with Alzheimer’s Dementia on June 11, 2021, at Brookdale Senior Living. Born April 18, 1932, to the late Olivia Folie and Walter D. Rish, in Wagener (Aiken County), SC.

Barney married Joann F. Curtin in August 1954. They were married for 59 years until her death in February 2013 of pancreatic cancer. Barney retired from the United States Air Force in 1973 after 22 years of service.
