Prince William conservationist, bluebell lover, Kim Hosen dies

Kim Hosen, the former Prince William County Planning Commissioner, and Prince William Conservation Alliance Director, has died at 70.

Hosen died Thursday afternoon, reports current Conservation Alliance Executive Court Squires. Former county supervisors Corey Stewart and Mike May appointed Hosen to represent the Occoquan District on the Planning Commission, where she served for 12 years.

Thirty six townhomes are being considered on Wesley Avenue in Manassas.

In a first for the city, Manassas is considering rezoning more than two acres in the city’s downtown sector for a housing project that would give city government employees the first crack at renting homes.

Prince William leaders project higher tax bills despite $10 million surplus, $34 million revenue increase

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors held its public hearing on a proposed tax increase, where the average homeowner could pay a $4,905 Real Estate tax bill, up $72 from last year, starting July 1.

County Executive Christopher Shorter dropped the proposed tax rate by one cent, to .966 cents on every $100 of assessed home value, from when he first proposed his 2024 budget on February 28. While the proposed rate is lower than the current $1.03 rate, increased property values mean homeowners will pay more.

Stafford tax hearing draws parents demanding more services, struggling taxpayers

Hundreds attended a public hearing on a proposed 38% percent tax hike in Stafford County.

On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, 81 people signed up to speak, and many shared stories of how their children struggle in the county’s public schools because of the division’s inability to retain experienced teachers, provide adequate places to provide tutoring, and its installation of trailer classrooms outside the school buildings.

Virignia Lt. Governor urges Prince William Republicans to vote early

Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears used the podium in Prince William County to encourage Republicans to vote early.

Sears urged Republicans to participate in the growing practice of mail-in voting, a practice more Democrats than Republicans have adopted since introduced in Virginia in 2020. Sears said Rep. Jennifer Higgins (R-Virginia Beach) lost Virginia Beach City because more voters cast mail-in absentee ballots for the Democrat in the race. Kiggans won the overall vote but would have performed better had more Republicans voted, said Sears.

Trash collection, landfill fees to increase

We’re not feeding you a line of garbage — it will cost you more in Prince William County and Manassas to dispose of waste.

The county plans to hike the annual landfill fee it charges residents to $75, up $5. The rate has been flat since 1998, explained Tom Smith, the county’s public works director.
