Drivers Get 30-Day Warning at New Manassas Red Light Camera Spot

Manassas officials will begin a 30-day warning period today at the intersection of Liberia Avenue and Wellington Road as part of the city’s photo red light enforcement program.

Traffic safety studies showed enough violations and crashes at the spot to add cameras there. The warning period runs through Aug. 16, after which active enforcement starts and citations can be issued. A Manassas City Police officer reviews every potential violation before any ticket goes out.

Route 1 Intersection Improvements Completed in Fredericksburg

The City of Fredericksburg announced that construction is complete on safety and traffic flow enhancements at two key Route 1 intersections, at Fall Hill Avenue and at Hanson Avenue/Princess Anne Street. Improvements include new crosswalks with pedestrian signals, extended turn lanes, raised medians, and updated traffic signals, with all vehicle lanes now open.

The projects, which began in December 2024, enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians in the historic city along a major Northern Virginia corridor, with final cleanup underway and additional paving planned for 2027.

Widespread Smoke from Canadian Wildfires Creates Hazardous Air Quality Across Northern Virginia

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has reduced visibility to as low as 1-2 miles in spots. Air quality is expected to remain poor through today and possibly into tonight. Sensitive groups (people with heart/lung conditions, older adults, and children) should avoid all outdoor physical activity. Healthy individuals should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor exertion.

The NWS notes a strong cold front will increase severe weather risks Saturday, with possible lingering threats south of I-64 on Sunday. High pressure brings drier, more seasonable conditions Monday before another front midweek.

Pedestrian Safety Upgrades Planned for Fredericksburg’s Fall Hill Avenue Corridor

The project targets the segment of Fall Hill Avenue from Washington Avenue/Germanna Street to the Mary Washington Boulevard roundabout. Improvements focus on pedestrian safety, traffic operations, and access management.

If funded, the project would require no local match. The application deadline is August 3, 2026, with funding decisions expected around March 2027. Construction is anticipated three to four years after funding.

Areas of smoke from distant Canadian wildfires will linger over Northern Virginia today, creating hazy skies and continued hot conditions.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington D.C. office, today will be mostly sunny with a high near 96. Heat index values could reach as high as 104 in spots. Winds will be light and variable. Areas of smoke are expected before noon.

Police Blotter: Shooting, Assaults Reported

This daily police blotter summarizes the most notable reports from area agencies.

On July 14 at 6:11 p.m., officers responded to the 11000 block of Folksie Ct in Manassas (20109) for a reported shooting. The victim, an 18-year-old man, and an acquaintance had arranged to meet another person for a sale. A verbal altercation occurred after money was exchanged, and the accused produced a firearm and shot the victim in the upper body. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital.

Stafford Schools Welcome Two New Administrators

Stafford County Public Schools has appointed Jennifer Meyers as the new principal of Hartwood Elementary School.Meyers brings more than 20 years of experience in education, including 10 years within the division.

She most recently served as assistant principal at Widewater Elementary School. Prior to that role, she worked as a math specialist at Winding Creek Elementary, an administrator designee, and a member of the Superintendent Advisory Committee. She began her career as a classroom and special education teacher across multiple school districts.
