On Tuesday, July 14 the Fredericksburg City Council will meet to decide on an action that could change the name of Route 1.

The City Council could vote to petition the Virginia General Assembly to remove the name of Jefferson Davis Highway from U.S. Route 1 statewide. This issue had been brought up at a June meeting of the council following protests in the city Fredericksburg in the wake of the police killing of Minneapolis resident George Floyd.

Dynamic speed signs have been set up on the E-ZPass Express Lanes on Interstates 95 and 495.

Transurban, the Australian-based transportation company that operates the express lanes, installed the new speed signs for a trial run. Much like traffic radar signs that drivers see along the roadside in neighborhoods, dynamic signs will show how fast a vehicle is going within the express lane.

River lovers could soon be forced to pay to park their vehicles at two popular Stafford County parks.

Parking fees at Falmouth Beach on the Rappahannock River, and Aquia Landing on the Potomac River,  was discussed at Stafford County’s Infrastructure Committee meeting on July 7.

Commuters traveling down the intersection of Courthouse and Mine roads in Stafford County will see a new traffic signal activated this week.

To allow motorists to adjust to the presence of the new traffic signal, it will be activated and placed in flash mode starting today, July 6, and continue to flash through early Thursday, July 9.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says drivers should expect a traffic shift along northbound Route 1 in Woodbridge, between Mount Pleasant Drive to just north of Marumsco Creek, on Monday, July 6 as part of the Route 1 widening project.

The two lanes of northbound traffic will shift to the right, including over the newly built section of the Marumsco Creek bridge. Lane closures leading up to the shift will occur beginning the morning of July 6 along northbound Route 1 from Mount Pleasant Drive to just north of Marumsco Creek.

OmniRide has resumed operations of all routes and has increased service levels on OmniRide Express buses which began in mid-June.

Weekday Express service to destinations in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. are running on a Friday schedule, which is one step down from full-service. The increase in service levels was based on the improving COVID-19 conditions, and the Governor’s order to begin reopening the state.

Travelers headed northbound on Interstate 95 will encounter major travel delays in the Fredericksburg area on Monday, July 13 through early Tuesday, July 14.

Lane closures are needed for 19 consecutive hours of milling, paving and lane striping to shift northbound traffic onto a new interstate overpass that spans Route 17 in Stafford County.
