Manassas was the biggest rival for the IBM campus that opened in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, in 1965, the News & Observer reports, in an item drawn from a new book on the park.
The item says that campus employed 1,000 people, more than half of them local, and that Virginia’s massive resistance after Brown v. Board of Education steered IBM to North Carolina. It says the last segregated school in Manassas stayed open until 1966.

A GoFundMe for Barbara Lamot has raised $44,815 of a $60,000 goal, with 233 donors. Kiley Morgan of Bealeton organized it for funeral costs, bills, and groceries. The Fauquier Times reports neighbors are rallying for the family. Lamot, 48, of Bealeton, was killed Sept. 30 at United Rentals on Wellington Road. Potomac Local’s story.
Reporter Nick Minock said the board released eight of ten people who had hearings, including people convicted of murder, rape, child abuse, and bank robbery. He said several had decades left and several victims had asked the board not to release them.
Thirteen Prince William County police officers graduated Friday, Oct. 2, from Session 64 of the Prince William County Criminal Justice Academy Basic Law Enforcement School. The ceremony was at Park Valley Church in Haymarket, the department said. The class finished a 24-week course covering firearms, use-of-force decision making, driver training, legal training, patrol techniques, criminal investigation, and crash investigation. The release does not give a start time, and it does not say the class took an oath.
The department said the class is three women, and that 38 percent of the recruits identify as Hispanic or African American. Two graduates speak Spanish, one speaks Cantonese, and one is fluent in Korean. Five are native to Virginia. Eight hold college degrees. One has prior law enforcement experience, and three have prior military experience or are still serving. Nuel Lim was class president, Ethan Hurley vice president, and Andrew Bresloff class guide. Eight students were taken to the hospital for dehydration Friday after an ROTC field day at Unity Reed High School, FOX 5 reported. Nine students were treated. The school was on a short hold, then the hold was lifted. Dismissal ran late. Principal Milagros Vélez told families the school is in contact with the families of the students.
Stafford County firefighters put out a truck fire Friday night just before 8 p.m. behind the Giant Food store at the Doc Stone Shopping Plaza, off Route 610 in North Stafford. The cab of the parked rig was burned out. Smoke could be seen about a mile from the plaza toward Interstate 95.
No injuries were reported. A Giant manager came outside and asked whether the store should be evacuated. Emergency officials said no, and that the fire was under control. The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office blocked the street and kept people out of the area.
The School Board voted 5-2 Monday to ask legislators for authority to drug-test new hires and rehires, the Fredericksburg Free Press reports. Courtland member Carol Medawar and Chancellor member Belen Rodas voted no.
The board twice voted this summer against doing the tests itself. Berkeley member Larry DiBella said asking Richmond would answer the legality question. The division can already test an employee suspected of being under the influence. No statewide rule requires testing teachers.
