Manassas Park tax deadline extended

Residents of Manassas Park will get another break on the deadline to pay their personal property taxes.

November 20, 2015, is now the deadline for Manassas Park residents to have their taxes paid. The tax payment deadline is set annually on October 5, but the City Council extended the deadline to October 30 due to issues with the city’s financial software known as AS 400.

Ongoing issues with the software forced city officials to extend the deadline again to November 20.

“We had figuratively been using ‘duct tape and bubble gum’ to hold it together, and it is not a piece of equipment that they really make anymore,” stated Manassas Park City Manager Kimberly Alexander in an email to Potomac Local.

The city has been in the process of replacing its outdated financial system with a new financial platform called “Keystone.” Instead of paying additional money to fix and prolong the use of the old system, the tax deadline was extended, and the implementation of Keystone has been expedited, added Alexander.

Problems with the old AS 400 system blocked city workers from keying in payments, and from accepting cash or credit cards. The city is still taking tax payments made by check and will hold them until the new system is up and running.

In September, city residents caught a break on utility bills when City Hall was temporarily closed for repairs.
