Chapel Springs Church summer camp teaches children important lessons

Chapel Springs Church just wrapped up their fifth annual summer kid’s camp in Georgetown South in Manassas.

According to Pastor Doug Dreesen, the camp has been part of the church’s effort to help transform the community.

“We want to be a part of transforming our community, and continue a lot of positive things that have been happening over the last seven, eight years,” said Dreesen.

The day camp, which ran from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Friday this week, was free to all community children. More than 50 children participated in the camp this year, according to Dreesen.

Each day of the camp had a different theme and accompanying stories from the Bible, and different stations including crafts, game, faith skills activities, music and dancing for the children.

“We talk about Christ and what he means…every day has a theme and a Bible story. Day one talked about announcing the birth of Christ to get the kids ready, day two was about listening with stories about John the Baptist, day three was ‘get in the game’, talking about disciples being called, day four was able playing fair and the fifth day was about Nicodemus and belief,” said Dreesen.

To celebrate a successful completion to the camp, Chapel Springs Church will host a Family Day celebration on Saturday with more than 600 community members.

“A big part of what we believe is helping the community – so we come out and do this camp every year. And then we cap it off with our Family Day,” Dreesen said.

The Family Day is done in partnership with a local Spanish-speaking church – Iglesia Vida – and will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 22.
