Pepper Spray Used on Security Guards During Mall Shoplifting

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A Washington, D.C. man dropped his license and is now wanted in connection to a shoplifting case that involves two victims who were pepper sprayed.

The victims, a 32-year-old man and a 40-year-old man, were working as loss prevention officers at Saks 5th Avenue Off 5th at Potomac Mills mall when they saw a man shoplifting on July 4. The victims followed the suspect to a parking lot, confronted him, and were then hit in the face with pepper spray, police report.

The victims were able to get a look at the suspect’s license plate, and they also found a driver’s license dropped on the ground by the suspect. Using it, police developed an identity for the suspect.

Derrick Kiwan Brown, 27, of 140 Kennilworth Avenue NE #3C in Washington, D.C., is wanted for grand larceny and for two counts of malicious injury by a caustic substance, police said.

He’s described as black, 6 feet 1 inches tall, 190 pounds, with a thin build, with long hair that could be a wig, and brown eyes.

Police said the merchandise stolen amounts to several pieces of clothing valued at $1,300.
