Prince William County Police have upgraded their investigation into Monday evening’s shooting near the basketball courts in the Potomac Shores community to a homicide after an 18-year-old man from Dumfries succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
The incident occurred on March 9 at 5:33 p.m. in the 1800 block of Potomac Shores Parkway, near Dumfries, an outdoor recreational area in the master-planned Dumfries neighborhood known for its family-friendly amenities, including the Shores Club and nearby basketball courts.
According to the latest police update, several individuals were playing basketball when another group arrived, leading to a confrontation. Gunfire was exchanged during the encounter, causing everyone to disperse. Officers arrived quickly and located one victim with a gunshot wound at the scene. Another individual was found at a nearby home on Spring Cress Drive, while three others self-transported to different local hospitals.
In total, five males aged 16 to 20 were shot. The deceased victim was identified as an 18-year-old man from Dumfries. The remaining injured include a 20-year-old man from Woodbridge, a 16-year-old male from Dumfries, and two 17-year-old males from Woodbridge. The surviving victims are expected to recover.
Several witnesses and possibly involved individuals were initially detained for questioning. Detectives continue to determine each person’s role and the events leading up to the shooting. Preliminary information indicates the incident was not random.
A nearby clubhouse sustained gunfire damage, though no additional injuries were reported from that.
Potomac Shores, a growing resort-style community along the Potomac River about 30 miles south of Washington, D.C., features modern homes, extensive trails, parks, a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, pools, fitness facilities, and plans for a future Virginia Railway Express station and Marketplace district. The basketball courts are part of community recreation areas, typically used for casual play in a suburban setting.
This fatal escalation disrupts the neighborhood’s image as a safe, amenity-rich place for families and active lifestyles.
The investigation remains active, with no arrests announced as of Tuesday morning. Police urge anyone with information—including witnesses—to contact the Prince William County Police Department.
