FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The city just finished installing new smart water meters in every home and business—saving money, cutting waste, and making life easier for residents.
On September 23, Fredericksburg held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of Phase 1 of its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project. The $4.5 million upgrade replaced nearly 8,800 aging water meters across the city with smart technology that automatically tracks water usage and helps detect leaks more quickly.
Before the upgrade, crews had to read 3,700 of the city’s meters manually. Now, usage data is transmitted several times a day over a secure cellular network, resulting in annual savings of approximately $150,000 in labor costs and improved billing accuracy.
“This project marks another transformative moment for the City’s public utilities,” said Mayor Kerry Devine. “It helps us deliver better service while saving money.”
Fredericksburg partnered with Badger Meter and Concord Utility Services to complete the work ahead of schedule and under budget.
Phase 2, launching next year, will introduce the “Eye on Water” app, allowing customers to track their usage in real-time.
