STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — A sinkhole appeared on U.S. 17 in at Interstate 95 in Stafford County.
A water main broke about at 8 a.m. today, about the same time the sinkhole appeared and that prompted officials to close two northbound lanes of U.S. 17 underneath the I-95 overpass.
“We’re not sure at this point whether or not the water main break caused the sink hole, or if the sinkhole caused the water main break – it’s like the chicken or the egg question,” said Stafford County spokeswoman Shannon Howell.
The water main has been repaired and now crews are working to fill in the hole with dirt. That operation could take place well into the evening, she added.
