FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A man from Woodbridge was shot and killed Sunday night in a shootout with police.
Fairfax County police said 21-year-old Nicholas Allen Kaelber, 21, of 2803 Wakewater Way in Woodbridge was shot about 11:20 p.m. Sunday.
That night, two officers saw two males acting strangely in the Mount Vernon area, near U.S. 1. The officers approached the two men and one fled, according to a statement from police.
The officers chased after the man who then took out a handgun and fired shots at the officers, police said. One officer returned fire and struck Kaelber. Afterward, he was then taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The second suspect got away, police said.
In December, Kaelber appeared in a Manassas courtroom facing charges of marijuana possession, and possession of a concealed weapon.
Court records show the cases both marked as Nolle Prosequi, where prosecutors were unwilling to pursue the charges.
