Dumfries Farmers Market Starts Saturday

DUMFRIES, Va. – Virginia’s first town will join the ranks of other communities in our area who have farmers markets.

Starting Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, the new Dumfries Farmers Market will be held in the parking lot at Town Hall on U.S. 1. It’ll be a weekly event each Saturday through Oct. 27, except on Sept. 8 when no market is planned for that day.

The town now joins Dale City, North Stafford, Occoquan, and the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton who all have farmers markets.

“We here in Dumfries need to able to purchase fresh produce, and all of the other things that come along with a farmers market,” said Dumfries Director of Community Services Cydny Neville.

There are four vendors signed up to be at the Dumfries market – many of them from Colonial Beach. There is space for up to 25 vendors, and Neville has been working to get out the word for the new market.

“I’ve gone to a lot of other markets in the area to spread the word about ours and there has been a lot of interest from vendors who want to come and be apart of what we’re doing,” said Neville.

In addition to fresh produce, you can also expect fresh bakery items and barbeque at the Dumfries event. Barbeque vendors will be allowed at the farmers market because it is an established town function; however, roadside barbeques and other vendors are not allowed to set up shop outside of a town function or festival per a town ordinance.
