Stafford, Va. –– Stafford County’s courthouse complex is one step closer to a new addition.
The county’s board of supervisors approved a $266,000 contract for the design of the new 11,000 square foot, $3.3 million courthouse annex, which will be located next to the courthouse and county administration offices in Stafford.
The design of the building should be completed by the end of the month, and when finished it will replace the now empty 30-year-old fire and rescue station that now sits next to the courthouse building, said Stafford County spokeswoman Cathy Riddle.
The annex will house Stafford’s Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and other court services organizations that are now located in rented offices across from the courthouse.
This summer, there was some debate as to whether officials should renovate the existing building, but county documents showed it would be more cost effective was to build a new building.
The county’s courthouse is located at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Courthouse Road.
The new annex should be open sometime in 2012, officials said.
