WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The trip home on Virginia Railway Express’ Fredericksburg line will be slower than normal today after ordered heat restrictions will reduce train speeds.
Forecasted record high temperatures prompted the owner of the railroad, CSX, to order trains to proceed down the tracks slower than normal. Usually seen during the hotter summer months, heat orders are usually issued to avoid cracked rails along the line.
The heat orders will be in effect until 7 p.m. on the Fredericksburg line and should not impact riders on the commuter railroad’s Manassas line, VRE officials said.
The mercury climbed to 75 degrees at Regan National Airport, and up to 80 at Dulles International Airport just before 2 p.m. Thursday. Isolated showers and thunderstorms remain a possibility through the late evening and early morning hours.
Temperatures are expected to climb once again to nearly 80 degrees on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
