College student killed in Stafford crash

A 21-year-man was killed Saturday night in Stafford County.

Ian Cummings died after he pulled his 2008 Nissan Maxima onto Interstate 95 from a median and sideswiped a tractor trailer, at 10:20 p.m.

In an accordion affect, the tractor trailer hit an empty tour bus, pushing it into the left lane of the highway, striking the Maxima, reports The Maroon, the University of Chicago’s student newspaper.

Cummings attended classes at the school and would have been a senior this fall.

Another man who was inside the car when it crashed, 20-year-old Shane Coughlan, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg for head injuries, the Maroon reported.

Couglan will be a third-year student at the University of Chicago this fall.

His recovery could take at least a year, the newspaper reported.

The two men were traveling from Washington to Cumming’s home in Charlottesville.

Couglan lives in Easton, Md.
