MANASSAS — The Royal Air Force turns 100 years old this year, and the celebration in the U.S. begins in our area this weekend.
Multiple planes used by Great Britain’s Royal Air Force in WWI and II will fly into the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum in Chantilly on Sunday. The event is dubbed the “Great British Fly-In: Celebrating 100 Years of the Royal Air Force.”
Officials in nearby Manassas on Monday said they expect airplane noise to increase starting Friday as some of the planes will be flying out of the Manassas Regional Airport.
The official event at the Air and Space Museum is free to attend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking at the museum is $15.
Some of the aircraft to be on display will be the Avro Lancaster, Spitfires, P-51 Mustangs, and the B-25 Mitchell. There will also be RAF officers and military experts on hand to speak to visitors about the planes.
The planes arrive at 8 a.m. and the public is invited to line up early to watch the grant arrival. Pilots will also do a departing fly-by of the museum at 4 p.m. Sunday.
