Woman Dies in Fire

One woman died and another person was injured in a fire at a home in North Stafford’s Lake Arrowhead subdivision.

North Stafford, Va. –– A woman died Friday night after a fire broke out at her home in the Lake Arrowhead subdivision.

Fire and rescue crews were called to 72 Lake Arrowhead Drive off Va. 610 at 8:11 p.m. On the way to the scene, crews learned someone was trapped inside the burning home, said Stafford fire and rescue spokesman Mark Doyle.

When crews arrived, they encountered heavy smoke inside the two-story home and went inside. They were able to locate the victim who was pronounced dead on the scene. A second victim was taken to a local hospital with first and second-degree burns but is expected to recover, said Doyle.

A firefighter suffered a minor back injury and was also taken to a local hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, said Doyle.

Fire investigators remained on the scene of the fire well after midnight Saturday. As a burnt screen door hung on the front of the house, police tape was used to cordon off the property as neighbors and family members of the victims stood in the street.

So far this year, fire and rescue crews in Stafford have responded to 161 structure fires, according to the fire and rescue department’s website.
