Police officer faces charges

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. – A veteran police officer is charged with resisting arrest in Stafford County.

Kevin Barrett, 49, was arrested at his home on Mountain View Road about 10:15 p.m. Friday, after he became confrontational with Stafford sheriff’s deputies who were called to his home for a report of a domestic dispute, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.

Barrett has worked as a Dumfries police officer for the past 10 years and has been put on administrative leave pending an internal investigation following the arrest, said Acting Chief Maj. Raymond Colgan.

Authorities said an argument broke out between a member of Barrett’s family and another man while Barrett was away from his home Friday night.

By the time the off-duty officer arrived home, Stafford sheriff’s deputies had already been called there.

Barrett became agitated when deputies questioned his family member, said Kennedy.

After being asked by his family to calm down, and threatened by deputies with the possibility of arrest, Barrett continued to be combative until authorities took him outside and placed him to a sheriff’s cruiser.

He was charged with obstruction of justice in addition to resisting arrest, said Kennedy.
