“Haul Out the Holly…” – the 76th Annual Greater Manassas Christmas Parade will be held December 3 at 10am, and Lots of volunteers age 18+ are needed! Duties include staging the participants, answering spectators’ questions and keeping everyone safe so they can enjoy the parade. October is here, and Historic Dumfries is getting ready for Halloween! “Return to the Shadows” is a nighttime walking tour of Dumfries held Fridays and Saturdays in October and is focused on telling the stories that made the town famous. “Tracking the Trickster” is held every Saturday in October and is almost sold out! Project Food has a number of volunteer opportunities: Their Food & Clothing Drive can be done on weekdays and/or weekends. This is for volunteers age 16+. Those under 16 can help with their parent’s supervision. Items can be collected any time before Oct.1. These include canned/boxed goods, clothing (new & gently used), hygiene items, housewares and bags (paper, plastic and recycle). Volunteers will help spread the word and arrange pickup and delivery of items. Their Assembly/Packing Day will be on Oct. 1, and they will accept volunteers age 16+. Those under 16 can help with their parent’s supervision. We will be assembling and packing items to be distributed to the homebound, seniors, working poor and homeless. Food Pickup & Delivery is on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Volunteers age 18+ are welcome if you have a car and are willing to lift items up to 25 lbs. PWC Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism has some great kid-friendly October volunteer opportunities! 1) Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park needs volunteers age 10+ to help make approximately 1,000 luminary bags by October 15 for their annual luminary program. Then October 15 beginning at 3pm, volunteers are needed to place and light the luminaries around the park. Volunteers are also needed the next morning to pick up and dispose of the luminaries. Please email [email protected] to learn more. 2) On October 21 and October 22, 6pm-10pm each day, Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre is having a “Spirits of Brentsville Haunted History Trail” where visitors learn Brentsville’s history in spooky ways. Volunteers age 13+ are needed to help as “scarers” who will help with some of the atmospheric elements of the haunted trail performance. The SERVE Family Shelter needs volunteer groups of 5-7 people who can prepare a home-cooked meal for residents experiencing homelessness. This is a terrific opportunity for individuals, families or small groups! Volunteers provide, prepare and deliver nutritious meals for about 60 guests on weekends and holidays. To celebrate Air Quality Awareness Week (May 6-10, 2024), Clean Air Partners is working with A Few Cool Hardware Stores to exchange DC, Maryland and Virginia residents’ gas-powered lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers at select Ace Hardware locations in the region. DMV residents who turn in their gas-powered lawn tools will receive a FREE Ego Power+ replacement including batteries and chargers, while supplies last.
Compared to gas, electric lawn equipment can reduce emissions, noise pollution, health risks and maintenance costs and time. The program aims to remove about a hundred gas-powered polluting tools from yards in the greater Baltimore-Washington region.
The exchanges will take place the weekends of May 17-19, 2024, and May 31-June 2, 2024, at A Few Cool Hardware Stores network of employee-owned Ace Hardware stores in the DC and Baltimore metro areas.
