Credit union blames computer glitch for Prince William teacher paycheck snafu

WOODBRIDGE — A software glitch yesterday left about 10 percent of Prince William County School employees asking where their paychecks were.

“We have about 11,000 employees. About 1,100 belong to the PWC Employees Credit Union. Due to a technical issue at the credit union, about 1,100 were not paid. We have been in frequent contact with the Credit Union and assured that all direct deposits had been made today by 1:30 p.m.” Dianna Gulatta, Prince William County Schools spokeswoman said in an email.

Robin Bodie, CEO of the PWC Employees Credit Union, attributed the glitch to a change in the direct deposit file they received from the school division.

“When that change happened, it prevented the file from automatically posting to members’ accounts,” Bodie said.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and we take payroll posting on time very seriously. We had to manually post each account. We were not leaving until that got done,” Bodie said.

To prevent direct deposit issues in the future, both the credit union and school board are proactively working on communication.

“We’re working closely with the school board to make sure that next time there’s a change, there is a process and procedure in place so that we can run a test file to make sure that any type of change that could affect the deposit is addressed in plenty of time to prevent disruption to the deposit,” Bodie said.

Checks were delayed was about four and a half hours and the glitch did not affect members of any other government agencies.

If any affected members suffered a financial hardship due to the glitch, the credit union promises to remedy the issue.

“There have been no reports yet of any financial hardship caused by this, but our members know that we are literally just a phone call away and we will always make it right,” Bodie said.

Members with any issues regarding the direct deposit glitch can reach the credit union at 703-680-1143.
