It’s one of the biggest names in technology, and it’s one of the biggest companies in the area: Micron, Inc., winner of the Prince William Chamber’s 2018 Tech Company of the Year.
Micron is one of the world’s leading providers of advanced semiconductor solutions and number one exporter in Virginia. Micron’s memory DRAM and NAND are in products such as computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, gaming systems and cars.
“Micron is the hidden gem of tech companies, not only in the City of Manassas, but in the entire Commonwealth,” states a nomination form submitted Manassas govenrment, the locality in which Micron is located.
“Every car made today has at least three pieces of Micron-manufactured technology in it. Micron is the leading exporter in Virginia and the number two manufacturer of memory in the world. The City of Manassas is honored to list Micron Technology as one of our businesses.”
Micron also owns more than 20,000 patents and has almost 50 percent market share in the automotive industry.
But more, the company is heavily involved in the community. Many of Micron’s partnerships have been developed to create a pool of STEM talent.
According to the nomination form, “Micron was instrumental in securing $250,000 in the first round of GO Virginia funding for a state-of-the-art engineering technology ‘Fabrication Laboratory’ in Northern Virginia. This project will help create high-paying engineering jobs in the greater Manassas region by leveraging established internship programs at Micron Technology and BAE Systems as well as the existing SySTEMic curriculum at Northern Virginia Community College’s Manassas campus.”
Micron’s collaboration with local school districts and their education foundations has resulted in the highest concentration of K-12 robotics programs in the Commonwealth and one of the highest concentrations in the U.S. Many former students who were on school robotics teams sponsored by Micron have returned to Micron to work as interns or full-time engineers and technicians.
A Micron representative never returned a request for comment for this story.
