STAFFORD — The Stafford County School Board opted for more time to study the purchase of the old Fredericksburg Christian School.
Elected leaders voted unanimously to extend the original 45-day study period to determine if the building’s current commercial zoning would permit use by the public school division.
In February, the school division decided it would open to paying $10.6 million on Route 610 in North Stafford next to the Market at Shelton Shop shopping center. The building would be used to house Pre-K and head start students in 20 new classrooms.
The school division would lose $25,000 to the current landowner if it pulls out of the sale agreement for any reason other than the county’s Board of Supervisors deciding not to fund the purchase of the building.
An analysis of the 14-year-old building found most things in good working order except for 10 of the 12 HVAC units on the roof. Many of them have hail damage and are reaching the end of their working lives.
Additionally, a janitor’s sink tested for higher than permitted levels of lead in water. The school division will flush the pipes and retest.
Fredericksburg Christian School closed its Stafford campus last year and still operates locations in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County.
