WOODBRIDGE — The Woodbridge Campus of Nothern Virginia Community College will reopen today for the first time in a week.
A water pipe burst inside one of the Seedfeldt Building on January 24, which prompted the closure. That building contains the most classrooms on the campus, school officials tell us.
School officials last week posted a message that the building would be closed at least through the weekend. That closure has now spilled over into the work week.
The closure has meant students who take classes at Woodbridge have been moved into other buildings, or off of the campus entirely.
On Tuesday, an OmniLink local bus stop on College Drive outside the building also remained inaccessible.
We’ve been following this story all week, and today we asked school officials to provide us with an update on what’s going on at the campus.
From a college spokeswoman:
NOVA will be opening the Woodbridge Campus tomorrow, Wed., Jan 31, for those classes relocated ON campus or at Freedom High School, as well as classes already scheduled to meet on campus. Woodbridge Campus leadership is developing a chart to show what classes will be held and where. This will be posted at www.nvcc.edu. Students should report early to ensure they have time to locate their class meeting location. Other courses will be scheduled to resume once logistics are completed.
Up until this [Tuesday afternoon], there was heavy equipment moving about the campus, which would have made pedestrian traffic a hazard.
Most of that equipment is gone, so our Office of Emergency Management staff will notify PRTC that they can add back the bus stop on Campus. In addition, there is a stop on the main road in front of Freedom High School that was not affected by our campus closure.
Repairs to the Seefeldt Building are well underway. However, the extent of the damage means the building will likely be closed for repairs for several weeks. NOVA-Woodbridge Campus administration has worked tirelessly to relocate approximately 855 class sections to other buildings on campus and, in a few cases, to off-campus locations.
We are still trying to solidify details for the off-campus locations, but we remain hopeful that process will keep moving forward and students will be back in class as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, students are in touch with their instructors via email, and some courses have continued via Blackboard and other electronic means.
