Red Cross called to help 2 adults, dog after Gainesville fire

Prince William fire and rescue crews rushed to the scene of a house fire Sunday night. 

Here’s more info in a press release from Prince William County Fire and Rescue Department: 

On Sunday, September 13th, at approximately 6:00 p.m., fire and rescue units were dispatched to a structure fire in a single-family home located in the 8500 block of Trade Wind Court in Gainesville.

Upon arrival, fire and rescue crews observed smoke billowing from the rear of the home. As firefighters approached, they observed a fire that initiated on the exterior and extended into the home had been extinguished. Fire and rescue crews checked for further extension throughout the home; no further extension was found.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. Red Cross was called to the scene to assist 2 adults and their dog.

According to the Fire Marshal’s Office, preliminary damages are estimated at $25,000. A Building Inspector was on scene to assess the building and posted the home unsafe due to exposed wiring.

The fire originated on the home’s exterior; the cause, unattended cooking and has been determined accidental. Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue Chief Kevin McGee would like to remind residents that cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

These fires are preventable by simply being more attentive when using cooking materials and equipment. Look

When You Cook:

Stay in the area of the cooking equipment when you are frying, grilling, broiling or boiling food.

If you must leave the area, turn off the equipment.

When simmering, baking or roasting, check it frequently and use a timer as a reminder.

Keep cooking areas clean and clear of any and all combustibles (e.g. potholders, towels, rags, and food packaging).
