‘By the River’ Offers Fresh Food Next to VRE

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — It’s a small store and deli with a lot to offer.

The “By the River Convenience Store and Cafe” is one of the few stops found along rural Brooke Road in Stafford County. It takes it’s name after its location, by the Potomac River and the Aquia Landing county park.

Inside the store is a full deli, where a mixture of Salvadorian and Mexican foods are prepared daily, fresh from scratch.

Most popular here are the taquitos, which is a tortilla rolled with chicken, paired with a salad with homemade tomato salsa.

Menu prices from from $5.99 for some items to $11.99 for the steak, which here is appropriaely listed on the menu as carne asada.

“People should come in and try our foods. It’s a small convenience store is make by scratch,” said Ivette Hernandez, who works at the small shop.

There is a dining area outside the store complete with tables, umbrellas, and patio furniture. It’s a warm, welcoming spot next to the Brooke Virginia Railway Express station.

The store’s customers are commuters who use the railroad, as well as those who live in the area, said Hernandez.

“By the River”  has been open for six months.
