NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — The driver of a sedan took out a fire hydrant about 8 p.m. Thursday.
The crash happened on Barrett Heights Road near Center Street in North Stafford. No one was injured, but water from the broken hydrant gushed from pipes in the ground flooding Barrett Heights Road, several nearby yards, and a gas station parking lot.
The broken fire hydrant should not pose a problem for utility customers in the area.
“Our public works department informs me that there is enough water in the system for this not to be a problem for the homes and businesses in the area,” said Stafford County spokeswoman Cathy Vollbrecht.
The driver’s car sustained heavy damage on the right front end after striking the hydrant. A woman who identified herself as a co-worker of the driver stopped to help, and said fire and rescue crews had been called to the scene.
Vollbrecht said Stafford County Public Works crews were also called to the area to assess the damage.
