DUMFRIES, Va. — Businessman and U.S. Marine Derrick Wood has been elected to the Dumfries Town Council.
Wood was a write-in candidate competing against two others, including incumbent Dumfries Town Council member Louis Parino whose name was not on the ballot.
In all, two seats on the Town Council were open. One of them went to incumbent Councilwoman Gwen Washington.
In May, Wood ran an unsuccessful bid for Town Council last spring. It was the same election in which Gerald Foreman was elected Mayor following last fall’s death of Mayor Fred Yohey.
Wood is well known in the Dumfries community and has long urged for food vendors like himself to be allowed to set up shop alongside busy U.S. 1, as many roadside vendors do in Stafford County.
Wood and Washington will be sworn into their new seats Tuesday night.
Election officials in Prince William County unofficilaly declared Washington a winner on Wednesday morning.
Because write-in ballots were used for the other candidates, officials said it would take longer to certify the winners.
