MANASSAS, Va. – The Hylton Performing Arts Center announced that it is pleased to renew its partnership with the Castleton Festival for the second year to present two Castleton Festival at the Hylton performances in Merchant Hall this summer. Each performance features world-renowned conductor and Castleton Festival founder Lorin Maazel conducting the Castleton Festival Orchestra.
The Castleton Festival, which is held every summer at Maazel’s bucolic farm estate in Rappahannock County, Va., has received international acclaim for its enormously successful residency program that fosters young artists, advanced students and emerging professionals. These two Castleton Festival at the Hylton performances are unique to the Hylton Center and complement the 2012 Castleton Festival performances that take place at the Castleton Farms estate this summer from June 22 to July 22.
On Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 8 p.m., the young artists of the Castleton Festival perform “Gershwin and Company: An All-American Evening,” a musical celebration of the American spirit. Pianist Kevin Cole joins the orchestra for a riveting performance of George Gershwin’s most popular work, “Rhapsody in Blue.” The Chicago Tribune said, “When Cole sits down at the piano, you would swear Gershwin himself was at work … Cole stands as the best Gershwin pianist in America today.”
On Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 8 p.m., the Castleton Festival Orchestra and singers bring a Grand Opera in Concert with Puccini’s “La Bohème.” Unencumbered by sets and elaborate costuming, this spectacular concert version allows the audience to be mesmerized by the Castleton Festival Orchestra and singers performing the beloved music of this heartrending opera.
For more than five decades, Lorin Maazel has been one of the world’s most esteemed and sought-after conductors. Formerly the music director of the New York Philharmonic, he is currently the music director of the Palau de les Arts “Reina Sofia” in Valencia, Spain, and will take on this role with the Munich Philharmonic in the 2012-2013 season. He also guest conducts with many of the world’s leading orchestras. Maestro Maazel and his wife, actress Dietlinde Turban Maazel, established the Chateauville Foundation in 1997 and the Castleton Festival in 2009.
Tickets for each performance are $30, $45, $60. Concert goers may also choose to buy tickets to both concerts for $48, $72, $96.
