Woodbridge VRE Kiss and Ride Lot Open

A new kiss and ride lot at the Woodbridge Virginia Railway Express station opens today.

Alexandria, VA – After much anticipation, VRE and Prince William County’s newest addition to the Woodbridge VRE station will be opened to the public Monday, January 30, 2012. Dale Zehner, VRE Chief Executive Officer, announced VRE’s Woodbridge Station “Kiss and Ride “ lot, located along Route 1, will open for Monday morning VRE service.

The project provides separated car and bus access from the northbound lanes of Route 1, as well as improved pedestrian access. Construction consisted of surface grading and pavement, adding a turning lane on northbound Route 1, concrete curbing, gutters, sidewalks, storm water drainage, crosswalks, a bus shelter, lighting, and signage all within a limited area and a very busy thoroughfare.

Dale Zehner explained that work has been ongoing for some time at the site due to coordination with the proposed future development of the Route 123/Route 1 interchange. The “kiss and ride” lot was designed and constructed to accommodate those future plans. Zehner noted that once final plans were signed off by VDOT, Prince William and VRE quickly mobilized and completed the work in 3 months.

“I’m very happy that everything has come together after nearly two years of planning, designing, traffic studies and construction. The second platform project always included adding this additional level of service for commuters and North Woodbridge residents. I am pleased that it has finally come to fruition,“ said VRE Chairman Wally Covington.

Covington said it is his hope that the new facility will provide commuters greater access to VRE and make commuting in the Route 1 corridor that much easier. Not only will the “kiss and ride” lot help VRE but Chairman Covington also noted that it will also serve users of PRTC and Greyhound as well.
