Just before 8 p.m., the National Weather Service extended its flood warning for the Potomac Communities after heavy rain was noted on Doppler radar.
Rain has inundated the region throughout the day and some light snowflakes are expected before the storm clears out.
Colder temperatures are expected late in the week.
Update 3 p.m.
Small creeks and streams are spilling over their banks prompting the National Weather Service to issue flood warning for North Stafford, and upgrade the flood watch to a warning in Prince William County.
The warning will remain in effect until 8 p.m., as heavy rain is expected to continue across the Potomac Communities.
Several drivers have reported flooding in the area, and a portion of Harrell Road in Stafford has remained closed for much of the day due to high water, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
Original post 9 a.m.
Rain will fall across the area for much of Wednesday, but the storm could end with snow after midnight.
By late Tuesday night, the National Weather Service had issued a flood watch for Prince William County and said up to three quarters of an inch of rain could fall in the Potomac Communities.
Rail will prevail during the day and will be heavy at times, and then it could change over to some snowflakes between 1 and 4 a.m., according to the weather service.
Less than an inch of snow is possible and forecasters say it should not cause problems on the road, accumulating in grassy areas only.
The sun is forecast to come reappear Thursday but temperatures will remain cool, in the mid 40s, according to the weather service.
