One Last Summer Blast

(File)

The end of summer is upon us, and highway crews will make it easier for you to get where you’re going this Labor Day holiday weekend.

All work on highways across the state will be suspended at noon today until noon Tuesday, as thousands of travelers are expected to hit the road for one last blast of summer.

The agency says orange cones will remain in place but the crews will not be out working. They also added that travel times will vary across the state depending on whether you travel at peak times.

Travelers headed to Virginia Beach and North Carolina’s Outer Banks are encouraged to take Interstate 664 and the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.

Those crossing Maryland’s Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore are encouraged to travel after 10 p.m. Friday, and before 11 a.m. and after 10 p.m. Sunday and Memorial Day.

Virginia State Police on Thursday also reminded drivers to take it easy on the roads this weekend. Thirteen people were killed in 2009, and 13 killed in 2010 on Virginia highways on the same weekend during those years, according to a VSP press release.
