A teacher was present in a classroom when a student was shot in the shoulder on Wednesday.
The male teacher had turned his back to the class while using a whiteboard, and the student who has been charged with possessing the BB gun pulled it from his backpack, said Stafford County Public Schools spokeswoman Valerie Cottongim.

Stafford, Va. –– A student from Brooke Pointe High School is facing charges after another student was shot with a BB gun.
A school resource officer who was on duty at the Stafford County high school Wednesday afternoon said witnesses saw the student showing off the weapon while inside a classroom.
During this time, authorities say another student was shot in the shoulder and had to be treated by the school nurse. After being treated, the student was allowed to return to class, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
Sheriff’s deputies placed petitions for the arrest of the 17-year-old student, charging him with possession of a weapon on school grounds, brandishing a weapon and unlawful injury, said Kennedy.
The suspect was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
