Lake Ridge, Va. –– A childrens author let loose a possum at Antietam Elementary School.

Luckily, the fuzzy guest was stuffed and came supervised by Jamey Long, a local author who writes for children.

On Friday, Long joined fourth graders to talk about his book “A Possum’s Day at School,” which covers the Civil War.

He also joined roughly 100 first grade students to share another one of his books, “A Possum’s Pot of Gold,” and to discuss writing skills, parts of a story, and what life is like being an author.

First graders enjoyed a book reading followed by trivia and a chance to win prizes — including a stuffed possum.

Teacher Kathy Lamont coordinated these events, and said they were a tremendous success for the school.

“Getting the chance to meet a local author was very exciting for our kids. Seeing someone who enjoys writing is a great example and Mr. Long’s writing suggestions will help our students improve their writing,” Lamont said.

Long’s books featuring a possum named “Opie,” whose readers follow him on adventures through history and holidays.
