Dean guilty in murder of wife, children

Prince William County, Va. — The man who killed his wife and two step children will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Carillo Dean, a former Prince William County park ranger who last year shot his 45-year-old wife, Elizabeth Dean, her 13-year-old son, Connor, and 14-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, plead guilty Tuesday to three charges of capital murder in connection to the Feb. 2009 slayings.

Dean will not receive the death penalty in the case as part of a plea deal, which has surviving members of the family – including Kevin Kirk, the father of the slain children and Elizabeth’s former husband – upset with prosecutors.

Prince William County Commonwealth Attorney Paul Ebert told Insidenova.com that a psychiatrist brought in by his team found Dean not to be insane, but found he did suffer from severe emotional problems.

Because of this, Ebert did not seek the death penalty (he was won more death penalty convictions than any other Commonwealth Attorney in Virginina) but rather opted for life in prison.

Dean called police at 10:45 p.m. Feb. 12 last year to his home in the 18400 block of Cedar Drive, after he shot and killed the victims.

Officers found Dean’s wife and Connor dead of apparent gunshot wounds. Brittany was found suffering a gunshot wound and was flown to an area hospital where she later died.

Dean will be sentenced April 1.
