HAYMARKET — With the Haymarket Town Council’s 5-1 decision to rezone 9.94 acres from business commercial to “Residential Moderate Density” land use designation, schools in the Gainesville District will become increasingly more crowded.
“We don’t run the schools,” said Haymarket Vice Mayor Susan Edwards just before voting in support of a rezoning request that would allow 79 new townhomes to be built in Haymarket.
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — On the heels of the announcement that Amazon will be locating its new HQ2 in Arlington, George Mason University announced that their Science and Technology Campus will double in size over the next five years.
“The university has grown considerably in recent years, adding approximately 1000 additional students year over year. Today, our student body includes over 37,000 individuals. Enrollment is projected to grow to 43,000 students by 2024. Student enrollment in STEM programs is growing faster than most. Our SciTech campus facilities are essential to meet the needs of this growing student body,” Dr. Deborah Crawford, George Mason’s vice president for research said in an email.
MANASSAS – (Press Release) On December 3, 2018, during a Grand Jury hearing, five suspects were indicted in connection with the murder of Reynaldo Eliazar Araujo which occurred on Massie St in the City of Manassas on August 30, 2018.
All five suspects have been indicted for lynching which is considered 2nd-degree murder and is defined by Virginia Code §18.2-39 as “any act of violence by a mob upon the body of any person, which shall result in the death of such person.”
Mama Mia, #20016, is the Prince William County Animal Shelter’s new “Pet of the Week.” Mama Mia came into the shelter on 9/12/2018. She was a little under the weather when she first arrived, but has been treated and has made a full recovery. MANASSAS – (Press Release) On November 29, 2018 at approximately 1:51 p.m., officers of the Manassas City Police Department responded to the area of Signal Hill Rd and Fairview Ave for a report of shots fired. A witness reported to police they observed a subject discharging a firearm from a vehicle. Based on information from a witness, the Prince William County Police Department was able to locate the suspect vehicle. The Prince William County Police Department pursued the vehicle after it failed to stop. At the conclusion of the pursuit, two subjects were taken into custody by the Prince William County Police Department (See Prince William County Police’s release for additional information). After an investigation by Manassas City Police Department detectives, the passenger, Alexis CARRASQUILLO SANTANA, was charged with willfully discharging a firearm within 1000 feet of a school and reckless handling of a firearm. CARRASQUILLO SANTANA is currently being held with no bond at the Prince William County Detention Center.

DUMFRIES — Dumfries has a new look.
On Nov. 20 the town council held its first meeting in the new building in which they finalized the design of a new town logo.
STAFFORD — We now know where the worst roads are in Stafford County.
A comprehensive review of local roadways ordered in March by Garrisonville District Supervisor Mark Dudenhefer yielded two spreadsheets listing a total of 94 county roads ranked from worst to best when it comes to traffic volume, safety, and the potential for development along the roadway.
