The Quartz District and the Whole Foods grocery store to anchor the mixed-use development — a first for Prince William County — comes before the Board of County Supervisors tonight.

Two developers, SKW VA, Inc. and Southern Knolls, LLC, seek approval to rezone 145 acres at Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road in Woodbridge. It plans to build 1,000 new homes, commercial retail and office space, a pavilion, and new parks and walking paths.

The event is timed with Halloween and comes as the holiday season approaches, historically the most challenging time for those in need to put food on the table. Rising inflation drove up food prices by more than 10% in the past year, and nearly half of area households with children experienced some food of food insecurity last year.

The non-profit, founded in 2020, works to provide food for the hungry in our area by working with restaurants and grocery stores to pick up unused food and deliver it to those in need. Last year, the food rescue provided 13.4 million meals to the hungry.

Voters in Stafford County could see a bond referendum on the ballot in November 2023 as the Board of Supervisors and School Board wrangle over how to pay for $1.6 billion in new schools and infrastructure needs over the next 10 years.

The school division needs two elementary schools to handle 1,10o more primary school students enrolled in the county by 2026. This year, the school division had 900 more elementary school-aged children enroll than expected as the pandemic waned and life in the classroom returned to normal for most children.

Philip Sowers told Potomac Local News he and his wife commute in their Buick SUV to work at an office on Fairfax County Parkway. They decided to use the new E-ZPass lanes when the first segment of the tolled lanes opened late last month, from Haymarket to Route 29 in Fairfax.

The only catch: the Sowers’ SUV had a luggage rack on top, making the vehicle over seven feet tall. The automated toll booths mistakenly took it for a small commercial vehicle and charged Sowers three times the regular toll rate.

Manassas Regional Airport recently hosted an unmanned research aircraft's first successful test flight.

Dawn One, an unmanned solar-electric hybrid research aircraft with a 90-foot wingspan, was designed to be used for atmospheric studies by Electra Aero. According to a press release on Electra's website about the event, Dawn One was created to be part of Harvard University's Stratospheric Airborne Climate Observatory System.

The project is supported by contracts from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Weld Foundation for Scientific and Environmental Development.

The project is designed to observe and collect data, allowing for deeper research into the physical, chemical, and biological controls that govern critical climate systems.

"The high-spatial resolution observations from SACOS will provide, for the first time, quantitative forecasts of risk associated with rapidly expanding wildfires, the increasing rate of sea level rise, the intensification of severe storms, and global shifts in arid regions that trigger water shortages," the project's leader Professor James G. Anderson Professor Anderson said. "Moreover, these quantitative forecasts of risk will, in turn, establish the essential intellectual links directly coupling irreversible changes in the climate structure to economics, public policy, and associated societal instability."

According to airport manager Juan Rivera, Electra approached the regional airport for the Dawn One test flight in June 2022.

"The airport supports new innovative aviation companies. These types of test flights may lead to new Advance Air Mobility (AAM) flights for our airport that could bring educational and career opportunities to this region," said Rivera.

Electra Aero is one of many new aerospace companies to open its doors in Manassas last year. The airport is also home to Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences and the Reston-based Leidos. According to Rivera, both companies have been at the airport for over five years.

New photos taken near the Rappahannock Regional Jail show what’s being flushed down the drain.

The Stafford County Government, responsible for maintaining the sewer system at the jail at 1745 Richmond Highway, says it found everything from food wrappers, all of which they say flowed into a pipe from the jail.

A year ago, Republicans swept Democrats from statewide offices in Richmond, from the governor’s mansion to the attorney general’s office.

Now Virginia Republicans are speaking boldly and hoping the red wave will flow through the halls of Congress in Washington and continue into 2023 in the General Assembly.

Stafford County leaders may have two new school sites when they need them most.

The school system projects an increase of 6,000 students in the next 10 years and called for a minimum of six new buildings to meet the projected capacity requirements.
