PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — When Wally Covington steps down, don’t expect Brentsville to have a voice any time soon.

Covington, who serves on the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, was confirmed today for a new position as a Prince William General District Court Judge, according to the woman who is running to replace him.

Prince William Approves Plan to Takeover Coles District Firehouse

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Prince William County plans to take over the Coles District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

The county’s career fire and rescue division wants to shift the management of the department, located at 13712 Dumfries Road near Independent Hill, to them, officially dissolving the 65-year-old volunteer fire company and forming new hybrid organization in its place.

Food Council to Focus on Feeding Prince William’s Impoverished

MANASSAS, Va. — Not knowing where one’s next meal will come from, or when it will come, is a widespread problem.

So, some area leaders in their respective fields decided to do something about it on the local level. On Thursday, the Greater Prince William Food Council will launch. The group, an idea born out of Leadership Prince William;s Class of 2014, will focus its efforts on making food more readily available to children and seniors in our community.

Overcrowded Schools in Woodbridge a Concern as Rivergate Complex Up for Review

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Drivers crossing south into Woodbridge from Fairfax County on U.S. 1 could soon be greeted by a new apartment development on the Occoquan River.

A plan to build 720 apartment homes along the banks of the Occoquan River next to a concrete plant is set to be heard Wednesday night at a meeting of the Prince William County Planning Commission. The development is called Rivergate and, if approved, will consist two buildings five to six stories tall, on about 14 acres of property accessible by Annapolis Way in Woodbridge.

More Options Coming for Montclair Commuters

MONTCLAIR, Va. — Starting on November 17, some bus riders from Montclair bound for Downtown Washington will no longer have to stop at the Pentagon.

The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, which operates OmniRide commuter buses from Prince William County, plans to add more trips to buses that carry riders from the Montclair community to the Pentagon and Downtown.

Running on Empty: Prince William’s Tysons Express Bus on Chopping Block

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — It was always a possibility that one day the bus which carries commuters from Woodbridge to Tysons Corner could stop running. Not because it ran out of gas, but money.

The Tysons OmniRide bus, which provides commuter service along the newly opened 495 Express Lanes, is poised to cease when Virginia pulls funding for service. The bus started running in 2009 at the height of construction on the 495 Express Lanes on the Capital Beltway. The idea was to take more people off the highways, and the state picked up the tab.

Aquia Harbour Rescue Squad Station 9 Building, Land to be Conveyed to Stafford County

NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — The Aquia Volunteer Rescue Squad building and the land it sits on will soon belong to Stafford County.

A deal brokered between the gated community’s Aquia Harbour Property Owners Association and local government officials will lead to the 22-year-old building, known as Station 9, being upgraded within the next 10 years, according to county documents. Volunteers and career fire fighters from Stafford County will continue to use the building for fire and rescue operations.

Quantico Creek Restoration Costs Soar

It’s going to cost $1.3 million, about a quarter of the town’s $4.4 million annual budget, to restore just one phase of Quantico Creek. The creek is a small stream that traverses the town running from Interstate 95 past U.S. 1 and flowing into Quantico Bay – a body of water where the town someday hopes to develop waterfront access for its residents.

Now, following a meeting of the Town Council, officials say they will go back and review the study that outlined how the creek should be restored and how much it will cost.

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — At 150 degrees, the enzymes inside begin to break down and sugars start to separate from the grains. What remains is poured into a boil kettle where the batch begins to boil at 210 degrees. Hops are added for flavor and then removed.
