Buses in jeopardy: Prince William faced with ‘transit death spiral’

PRTC’s offices and Transit Center are located at 14700 Potomac Mills Road in Woodbridge.

The future looks bleak for transit bus service in Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park.

The Potoamc and Rappahannock Transportation Commission which operates OmniRide commuter buses and OmniLink local buses faces a $9 million budget shortfall in fiscal year 2017. That number grows to about $12 million in FY 2018 and continues in the following years.

Residents on Potomac River Coal Ash Plan: We weren’t notified

Virginia environmental officials took questions Tuesday night from the public about a plan to treat toxic water and drain it into the Potomac River.

Residents who live near Dominion Virginia Power’s Possum Point Power Station outside Dumfries and across from Quantico say they’re fearful of the plan, which could lead to higher than normal levels of heavy metals in Quantico Creek and Potomac River that would flow downstream to the Chesapeake Bay.

Ed Asner at Manassas Christmas reception: ‘you can’t throw snowballs at me’

A reception was held Friday night in honor at Ed Asner, the longtime actor and political activist who will serve today as the Grand Marshal of the 70th Annual Greater Manassas Christmas Parade.

Fans of Asner to include the city’s mayor and members of city council, the police and fire chiefs gathered inside the Manassas Museum at 5 p.m. for the catered affair. Asner, 86, was walked inside the museum gallery and was given a chair, and many people came up to him to have their photos taken, to take a “selfie” photo, and to tell him what big fans they are of his.

Huckabee visits Woodbridge, says U.S. at war with ‘radical Islam’

Mike Huckabee urged voters in Woodbridge to sign a petition to get him on the ballot, whether they end up voting for him or not.

The former Arkansas Governor said Virginia is the most difficult state to get a candidate’s name on a ballot. Unlike some states that require paying the appropriate fees that range between $20 and $40,000, or by simply submitting one’s name — the commonwealth requires a proportionate number of signatures from each congressional district before a candidate’s name is placed on the ballot, said Huckabee.

McAuliffe calls Potomac High School ‘cyber warriors’ future of data protection

Virginia’s governor said the state’s IT infrastructure is continually under attack. Hackers try to access illegally healthcare information, personal financial data, and they’re aiming next to steal tax and social security information.

A group of “cyber warriors” from Potomac Senior High School in Woodbridge will lead the defense against the latest online threats. The students were recognized by Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Wednesday, who called them the future first line of defense when comes to protecting critical data.

The Norfolk and Western “611” steam engine will return to Manassas for the annual Heritage Railway Festival in 2016.

The 65-year-old Class J steam engine was the centerpiece of the 2015 annual Heritage Railway Festival. The engine was fresh off of a restoration and on a statewide viewing tour when it rolled into Downtown Manassas.

Treat and release: What Dominion wants to do with toxic water at Possum Point

The Possum Point Power Station opened in 1948 as a coal-burning facility, generating electricity for the region.

Coal, when burnt, leaves behind coal ash — a fine powdery, toxic substance. That ash was placed in five ash ponds surrounding the power plant.

One is a public probe ordered Saturday by the Board of County Supervisors to learn if county police are talking to federal immigration and customs officials, or ICE when officers come across anyone has criminal, or civil administrative — also called a deportation order — against them.
