Prince William County continues its march toward a brand identity. Getting there may not be easy.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Prince William County leaders want more drivers to see the signs.

For years, there have been green highway signs on highways welcoming drivers to the county. Blue street signs hung on the mast arms of signal lights show street names.

LAKE RIDGE — If you’ve ever crossed the Occoquan River bridge on Route 123 while traveling south from Fairfax County, you know about the constant backups.

On weekday afternoons, the right lane of three slows quickly as drivers queue up to turn right onto Old Bridge Road for the last leg of their commutes into eastern Prince William County.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Now called a zombie road after the Prince William County Board of Supervisors removed it from the county’s comprehensive plan, David Birtwistle, of the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance, urged officials to bring back the Bi-County Parkway.

The Alliance, known for championing road projects in the growing sections of western Northern Virginia, said the road would allow the George Mason University Science Center outside Manassas to boom, attract new employers to the county, and provide better access to Dulles International Airport.

WOODBRIDGE — It’s the second phase of a much talked about project: a new interchange at Routes 1 and 123.

For years, this road improvement has been viewed as a catalyst for redevelopment in “North” Woodbridge. The overpass would remove a traffic light notorious for stalling traffic at the congested intersection of the two major thoroughfares Routes 1 and 123, and would provide direct access to more than 1 million square feet of commercially-zoned land in Belmont Bay along the Occoquan River.

This couple demands Prince William County take all of their property for a wider Route 1

WOODBRIDGE — Prince William County officials on Tuesday authorized more than $3.7 million for the purchase of multiple pieces of property for the Route 1 widening project.

The county needs to condemn mostly portions of commercial properties along the busy corridor in Woodbridge to widen the road from four to six lanes on a 1.3-mile stretch of road between Featherstone Road and Mary’s Way.

WOODBRIDGE — A new $37 million parking garage will go a long way to help relieve a commuter parking shortage along Interstate 95 in Prince William County.

It’s a project the county is moving ahead with after winning federal funds to construct the garage. It just needs to find a spot to build it.

DUMFRIES — Senator Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford) says his bill is the only piece of legislation addressing coal ash still alive in the General Assembly.

Bill 807 would extend a moratorium on closing the coal ash ponds and would prevent the Department of Environmental Quality from issuing pond closure permits.

Sentara encounters pushback in its efforts to bring PET/CT to Woodbridge

WOODBRIDGE — The Virginia Department of Health will hold an informal fact-finding session after a petition to add a mobile PET/CT scanner was filed by Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.

A PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography) scanner is used to detect the early onset of cancer. A radioactive isotope, called a tracer, is injected into the body, and sugar inside the injection is absorbed by cancer cells, allowing the scanner to identify them.

MANASSAS — The green light is lit for $128 million in improvements the Virginia Railway Express Manassas line.

Three stations — Manassas Park, Manassas, and the Broad Run terminus station — are all set to receive overhauls on everything from parking lots to pedestrian platforms.
