Here are the ‘worst’ roads in Stafford. Will voters choose to pay to fix them?

STAFFORD — We now know where the worst roads are in Stafford County.

A comprehensive review of local roadways ordered in March by Garrisonville District Supervisor Mark Dudenhefer yielded two spreadsheets listing a total of 94 county roads ranked from worst to best when it comes to traffic volume, safety, and the potential for development along the roadway.

Updated: New rule for Parks Commissioners: Get paid only if you attend the meetings

WOODBRIDGE — Prince William County Parks and Recreation Commissioners will now have their compensation tied to attendance.

The county Board of Supervisors voted to withhold commissioners’ $400 monthly compensation if they don’t attend the regularly scheduled monthly meetings. The move comes after some commissioners missed multiple meetings over the past three years and still collected a paycheck.

Manassas is growing so much it’s spending $28 million on new water projects, including buying more space at a sewage treatment plant

MANASSAS — Micron Technology is the biggest user of water in Manassas.

And, they’re about to get even bigger. Once the chip maker opens its $3 billion expansion in 10 years — the largest economic development project in Virginia history — the tech giant will increase its water demand by 1.3 million gallons per day.

In landmark deal, Stafford approves e-commerce warehouse with 30-year tax break

STAFFORD — A Maryland firm won’t pay Stafford County’s Merchant’s Capital tax for 30 years should it move ahead with plans to build a warehouse near the county’s airport.

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted unanimously to waive the tax that is levied on a company’s amount of stock on hand, in exchange for the construction of a 485,000 square-foot warehouse space designed for e-commerce.

With a deadline that has come and gone, Stafford is still looking for an elementary school protection officer

STAFFORD — Two of the three police officers politicians promised parents would protect Stafford’s elementary school are in place.

Sheriff David Decatur is working to hire the third deputy to make good on the $481,000 promise to place school protection officers in three county elementary schools. When the elementary school protection officer pilot program was approved by the Stafford County Board of Supervisors in May, the goal was to have the three part-time deputies in place by the start of the 2018-19 school year.

City approves a half million dollars in economic incentives for Aurora Flight Sciences

MANASSAS — City leaders Monday approved half a million dollars to improve a major thoroughfare at the Manassas Regional Airport.

The city plans to widen Wakeman Drive and to add pedestrian improvements such as bike lanes. The improvements are designed to make the area more desirable and to attract more business to the area.

Study suggests eastern Prince William needs more IT, government contractors. In the west, it’s healthcare.

WOODBRIDGE — A top economic development department official continues to push Prince William County leaders to buy up private land in along busy Route 1.

Jeff Kaczmarek, the outgoing county Economic Development Director, to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to do a similar deal it nearly 20 years ago, when the county spent $8.5 million on 500 acres of land on which sits Innovation Park, now home to George Mason University Science and Technology Campus, the FBI, and 2 Silos Brewing.

What’s next for Prince William County Fire Chief Kevin McGee?

WOODBRIDGE — The next fire chief for the city of Austin Texas is Joel Baker, the former chief in Atlanta.

Prince William County Fire and Rescue Chief Kevin McGee was one of three finalists for the job. He interviewed at a public forum in Texas in late October with two other finalists, including Baker.
