Kinston, N.C. –– The Potomac Nationals gutted out a 2-1 victory in extra-innings in Kinston to snap their five-game losing streak and salvage the finale of the four-game set at Grainger Stadium. Steven Souza’s sacrifice fly in the eleventh inning capped off a seesaw win that showcased special efforts by several of Nationals.
The Nationals (11-18) took the lead in the first inning, saw the game tied in the sixth, and escaped two huge jams to set the stage for Souza’s winner.
Stafford sheriff’s deputies spotted two people on a small island just west of the Falmouth Bridge.
The two became stranded on the island after their kayak overturned and one of them suffered a head injury, said Stafford fire and rescue spokesman Mark Doyle.
Drivers on I-95 are reporting backups from mile post 138, and drivers on U.S. 1 say traffic is backed up from the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

Fire and rescue crews were called to an apartment at 1401 Providence Street, off Mine Road and Greenspring Drive, at 4:41 a.m. Sunday.
Crews entered the three-story apartment building and found fire in the bedroom of apartment 203.
Kinston, N.C. –– The Potomac Nationals’ offensive woes continued Saturday in Kinston, as the Nats were shutout in both games. With a 3-0 defeat in the matinee and a 5-0 loss in the nightcap, Potomac falls to eight games below .500 and has now lost five straight.
In Game One, top prospect Drew Pomeranz gave the Nationals (10-18) chances early. Once they failed to cash in, the lefthander settled in and dominated. Potomac stranded two runners in both the first two innings, and would have just two more the rest of the way. Pomeranz struck out eight over five innings, allowed just three hits and remarkably earned just his first win in the Carolina League (the southpaw has been dominant in six outings, allowing just five earned runs).
Stafford sheriff’s deputies were searching a home at 5 Catherine Way during an unrelated incident when they found what appeared to be an explosive device.
The Fire Marshals office was called to the scene, and they called Virginia State Police who removed the device and detonated it, said Stafford fire and rescue spokesman Mark Doyle.
They’ll bring their mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog, offer tours of the fire engine, a 100-foot ladder truck and ambulance.
The crew of MEDEVAC helicopter Air Care 1 will also be on hand at 2:30 p.m. to talk to festival goers.
The budget is $11,000 less than Prince William County’s 2012 operating budget approved last week.
With the Prince William County School Board’s approval of its $879 million FY 2012 budget on May 4, the construction of a new elementary school planned for western Prince William will be begin a year earlier, employees will see a small raise, and many schools will get technology upgrades. The cost of school lunches will increase by 5 cents.
