Kinston, N.C. –– For the second straight night the Potomac Nationals mustered just three hits. Predictably, they dropped their second consecutive ballgame 3-1 in the opener of a four-game set in Kinston.

Paul Demny was once again the hard luck loser. Demny (0-2) got typically sparse run support and one shaky inning cost him. A bunt single from Justin Toole opened the third, after Demny had sent down the Indians in order in the first two frames.

A day after a 20-6 slugfest, the ball clubs locked horns in a pitchers’ duel. Trevor Holder shut the Pelicans down for four innings, but Wieland was more than up to the challenge. The Myrtle starter matched zeroes and struck out eight Nats through four.

Myrtle broke through in the fifth; Jared Prince’s one out double was cashed in when Jared Bolden singled to right. Wieland held the Nats in check in the fifth and sixth innings with four more strikeouts to run his total to 13, and Myrtle doubled its lead in the sixth.
