DALE CITY, Va. — The Dale City Volunteer Fire Department regrets to announce the passing of Associate Member Margaret Delaverson.

Margaret served with the department for over 15 years. She participated as an officer of the Board or Directors holding the position of Treasurer and Membership committee chair. Margaret was instrumental in establishing the Rehab Unit. Her infectious optimism and untiring dedication to all things “Second to None” is sorely missed.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Gas prices have fallen in recent weeks, but lower income families say they don’t feel the decrease.

The average price for a gallon of gas in the Potomac Communities is $3.57, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic’s Fuel Price Finder. The price of fuel on the east coast has fallen about 30 cents in the last month, but on its risen on the west coast about 11 cents, the price per gallon now hovering around $4.16.

OCCOQUAN, Va. — It’s only a matter of hours until Occoquan’s Spring Craft Show begins.

The first of two this year, the spring show will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. It will feature country and contemporary crafters, and crafters will line the tiny town’s Mill Street in its business district.

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Thefts from autos is up in Stafford County prompting a new campaign aimed at preventing crime.

Stafford Sheriff Charles E. Jett announced the “Take It, Hide It, Lock It, or Lose It” campaign today, urging residents to remove valuable items from their cars or at least hide them from plain view, and then to lock their cars. The campaign comes as larcenies in Stafford have risen by 45 percent in recent months largely due to unlocked cars.

RICHMOND, Va. – Thomas Haynesworth spent 27 years in prison on three felony charges before DNA testing proved he was innocent. He was exonerated last December, and the General Assembly compensated Haynesworth this spring for his wrongful incarceration.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — It’s estimated that one in five Americans watches birds. Now, a professional bird watcher is coming to Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge to help those just starting out in the hobby as well as experienced watchers.

Joe LaFleur from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5, will guide a bird walk along Carriage Road in the park and along swamp trails, featuring hands-on identification of birds in habitats like woodland and marshy areas. Afterward, LaFleur will host an audiovisual program at the park’s visitor center that will help visitors identify birds by sights and sounds.

MANASSAS, Va. – The Hylton Performing Arts Center announced that it is pleased to renew its partnership with the Castleton Festival for the second year to present two Castleton Festival at the Hylton performances in Merchant Hall this summer. Each performance features world-renowned conductor and Castleton Festival founder Lorin Maazel conducting the Castleton Festival Orchestra.

The Castleton Festival, which is held every summer at Maazel’s bucolic farm estate in Rappahannock County, Va., has received international acclaim for its enormously successful residency program that fosters young artists, advanced students and emerging professionals. These two Castleton Festival at the Hylton performances are unique to the Hylton Center and complement the 2012 Castleton Festival performances that take place at the Castleton Farms estate this summer from June 22 to July 22.
