DUMFRIES, Va. — Residents of Dumfries tonight will have their say on a plan that could allow a debris landfill to grow in piles of up to 310 feet tall.

A public hearing will be held tonight at six o’clock at Town Hall on Main Street where residents have been invited to speak about a request from the operators of the Potomac Landfill to town officials to allow the landfill to increase the height of their debris piles from 195 feet to 310 feet.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Family, friends, co-workers and members of area fire and police departments gathered this Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Woodbridge on Minnieville Road to pay their respects to former OWL Volunteer Fire Department Chief Richard “Ricky” Arrington.


LAKE RIDGE, Va. — At 102, Doris Woodring reckons she’s the oldest participant in this month’s 2012 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO). The resident at Westminster at Lake Ridge will compete for her first time in scrabble on Sept. 24 at the Lincolnia Senior Citizen’s Center.

“I’m pretty sure I’ll be the oldest Olympian,” says the resident at Westminster. “Scrabble keeps my mind alert. I still do my own finances, you know.”

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Virginia State Parks offer a variety of hunting opportunities, including several lottery and reservation only hunts, as well as open hunting throughout the season. The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

FAIRFAX, Va. — Mark Gibson, independent candidate for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, says he’s eager to engage the other candidates and media in a forum on Wednesday, September 12 at 8 p.m. televised by Reston Community Television, RCTV28 on Comcast. But, Gibson said, “I’m disappointed that the incumbent has declined.”

Gibson will appear along with Republican candidate Chris Perkins and Green Party candidate Joe Galdo. Moderated by Colin Mills, President of the Reston Citizens Association, and John Lovaas, host of RCTV28’s Reston Impact, journalists from three media outlets serving Reston – The Connection, Fairfax Times, and Patch.com – will pose questions to the candidates.

DUMFRIES, Va. — With fall on the doorstep, Dumfries will ring in the post-summer season this weekend at Garrison Park behind Town Hall.

The town’s annual Fall Festival begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and goes until 5 p.m. Festival-goers can expect plenty of wine tastings, music, a talent competition, food, and arts and crafts, and product vendors at the fair.
