STAFFORD -- There’s more water in Stafford than officials first thought.
The county's planning and zoning director Jeff Harvey, Director told the board of Supervisors the county could support the construction of 6,500 new wells. Homes in the county draw from the Piedmont Aquifer, and last year county officials were concerned that aquifer was on the brink of running dry.
The county’s comprehensive plan currently 200 new homes being built per year outside urban services area, where new homes will rely on well water and not be connected to county water and sewer.

STAFFORD -- Stafford County Tourism is sponsoring a three-race series between September and December.
Runners wanting to participate can still sign up for the Halloween 5K and Monster Mile on October 27 and the Frosty 5K and Reindeer Run on December 15.
The first in the series, Cannon Run, was a four-mile race that took place on September 9.

STAFFORD-- Residents and Stafford officials are looking at new ways to bring broadband internet to underserved rural areas of the county.Â
The Marlborough Point, Hartwood, and Widewater areas of Stafford County have few options for broadband Internet and unreliable cell phone service, according to Stafford Aquia District Supervisor Cindy Shelton.
A wireless broadband company from neighboring King George County aims to change that.

STAFFORD-- Brooke Road in Stafford has flooded five times in 2018.
Rising water has caused damage to the road and is a safety hazard for local residents.
“Brooke Road is built on low-lying terrain between the intersection of Andrew Chapel Road and its endpoint at Aquia Landing. This area of Brooke Road parallels Accokeek Creek and is located in a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mapped floodplain,” said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kelly Hannon.

OCCOQUAN-- Bann Thai Old Town opened its doors on September 9 in the Occoquan. This new Thai restaurant offers dine-in, carry-out, catering, and delivery for a five-mile radius from the restaurant.
This is owner Nalinrat Pienthumdee’s first restaurant. She partnered with a very experienced chef to bring authentic Thai food to Northern Virginia. Chef Tang has over ten years of experience as a chef.
“Every dish he prepares he wants people to have a great experience about the food,” Pienthumdee said about Chef Tang.

CENTREVILLE -- Despite its location in bustling Northern Virginia, the largest remaining working farms in the area will stay that way.
On Sunday, September 9, politicians and conservationists gathered at The Winery at Bull Run to celebrate a recent achievement in preserving history, nature, and business.
The Northern Virginia Conservation Trust and the winery worked together to create a 90-acre conservation easement on the property in Fairfax County. The winery and farm sit near the Manassas National Battlefield in neighboring Prince William County.

STAFFORD -- Thanks to efforts by Stafford County Delegate Bob Thomas (R) to expand Medicaid in the state, Stafford County will hire three additional social workers.
These additional employees could bring much-needed relief to overburdened Stafford County Social Workers. Social Services estimates an even larger workload with the expansion of Medicaid benefits.
Jack Cavalier, Stafford County Board of Supervisors Griffis-Widewater District, said, “We have been fairly understaffed at our social services department anyhow, we were planning on an expansion. It just happened to all come together and the state's going to pick up a good percentage of the tab on this one.”

GAINESVILLE -- There's a new Hibachi restaurant opening this month at Gateway Promenade.
A new location of Passion Fin is slated to open at Gateway Promenade in Gainesville at 7320 Atlas Walk Way. While this restaurant’s main attraction is sushi and hibachi, but they will also offer Thai and Chinese food. They will serve beer, wine, sake and an assortment of soft drinks.
This family-friendly restaurant is locally owned and operated. Owner Jay Lin recently relocated to the Gainesville area to personally oversee operations of this location.

GAINESVILLE -- RockWood Sports Bar is now open in Gateway Promenade in Gainesville.
The latest creation of D.C. restaurateur Mike Cordero, this restaurant opened in the space previously occupied by Ruby Tuesday.
According to the restaurant’s website, they serve American comfort food with a trendy twist. Staples like Rock the Stack, a gourmet burger with a half-pound beef patty with applewood bacon, American cheese, online rings, lettuce, tomatoes and a special mayo sauce.

HAYMARKET -- Sailors from USS Gravely greeted students and volunteered in classrooms at Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School on students’ first day back at school for the 2018-2019 school year.
At the start of the school day, sailors lined up outside the building to greet families. They also handed out stickers to each student to remind them, and their teacher, if they were car riders, walkers or bus riders. Â
Principal Michael Kelchlin expressed his gratitude for the extra hands on deck for the first day of school. He said, “The time commitment that they made to come up here and show the kids that they’re important and that education matters is huge.”
